In recent years plastic surgery has been a growing trend in South Korea. Most people go through these facial reconstructing surgeries to better appeal to the societies "beauty" standards. Plastic surgery has been accepted in Korea that it's considered to be a norm and not getting plastic surgery is some what frowned upon. Many people in South Korea get plastic surgery and it is popular among all age groups, but most popular within the teens and young adults. Plastic surgery is usually gifted to teens and young adults as a reward for excelling in school, getting into college, graduating from school, or for becoming a young teen idol. Some of the most popular procedures that South Koreans get are double eyelid surgeries, nose jobs, and jaw reduction surgery. But these plastic surgeries that are rewarded to them aren't just gifts, they also serve to help them get further in life. In South Korea, looks are everything. Their looks helps them land job opportunities, romance/marriage proposals, and overall acceptance into society.
The purpose of this research is to understand and investigate the deep reasons behind getting these surgeries and knowing what these surgeries mean and how it affects the individual's identity.
To get a better idea of what teens and young adults in South Korea think about plastic surgery watch this short video on vimeo.
The methods I'll be using to investigate my research is by looking at scholarly articles written by experts in this topic, personal blogs, forums, before & after pictures, and videos.
